EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Burning of magnesium ribbon and reaction of magnesium oxide with water

When magnesium is burned  it will react with oxygen and produce magnesium oxide (metals generally react with water and produce metallic oxide)

burning of magnesium can be represented as

magnesium + oxygen  -----> magnesium oxide

2Mg + O2 -----> 2MgO

If the metallic oxide is soluble in water it produces metallic hydroxide)

When magnesium oxide is dissolved in water it produces magnesium hydroxide (magnesium oxide is soluble in water). (Metallic oxides are basic in nature). Magnesium hydroxide formed by the mixing of magnesium oxide in water is a base it turns red litmus blue as shown in the video

The reaction of sodium with water ( Explosive reaction of sodium with water)

 Metal generally reacts with water and produces metal oxide and hydrogen gas

metal  +  water    ---->    metal oxide + hydrogen gas

(if metal oxide is soluble in water it will produce metal hydroxide after the above reaction)

SODIUM is a highly reactive metal. When sodium is put in water it immediately catches fire because sodium combines with water and produces sodium oxide and hydrogen gas(highly inflammable gas). This reaction is also a highly exothermic reaction(reaction in which heat is released)

So when hydrogen gas is produced along with the production of heat resulted it catches fire (sodium will explode when it is put in water

reactions can be represented as

sodium + water----> sodium oxide + hydrogen gas

Na + H2O  --------> NaO + H2

Since sodium oxide is soluble in water, it reacts with water and produces sodium hydroxide. So the equation can also be represented as

Na + H2O -----> NaOH + H2
